It is similar. When learning from the start it is better to avoid dead run where an involuntary gybe can occur. A training run is about 15 degrees up from a dead run and a little down on a broad reach. And yes the centreboard can be raised. Hope this helps! Tim Sailaboat

This is due to the change in hull shape in the water as the boat heels over. The same effect happens on bigger boats. For a model boat the strength of the wind will have a larger effect due to scale. What is happening is when the boat heels it will want to turn into the wind. If you ski or ice skate you turn by leaning on one leg. Same thing happens on a boat. As it heels the water shape is upset and no longer a symmetrical shape. This change in shape means water has to travel faster on the leeward - boom side of the boat. This extra speed generates lift and the boat turns. Spilling wind in the gusts will help which is what bigger boats will do. This reduces the effect of the wind and reduces the turning effect…… Another possibility is to increase rudder size. Another possibility is to have a smaller sail on windy days. Same thing for big boats when they reef to make a smaller sail and reduce the turning effect Hope this waffle makes a bit of sense! Tim

Carrying on. Another tip if possible, I don’t know what sail controls you have but try not to pull the main sail control in quite so much on windy days. This is another sailing technique. The boat will not point into the wind as high, and will sail further to get upwind but the looser sail outs less sideways force on the rigging and hence less tipping which will be less turning into the wind.

This boat is a Laser single person boat. Now called the ILCA. It is a current Olympic class and can be bought with different sized sails. Best one if you are considering as a newbie is the radial sized sail which is more manageable as you learn Hope that helps Tim Sailaboat

Many thanks. Sadly we have no more content As for the jib there are a few ways here. For newbies just let it go. This makes the centre of effort move backwards and helps the tack. However the sail flaps which I don’t like. As you get more proficient the crew should just ease the jib sheet enough so the front of the jib back winds but doesn’t flap. Keep holding the job sheet on this setting as the boat turns through the no go zone. Continue to hold the jib sheet on the setting as the sail starts to back wind - fill on the other side - what this does is help the bow quickly move out of the no go zone on the new side. Only hold it for a second or so as the boat turns then release the sheet and pull it on the new side. The sail shouldn’t flap and will help the boat to tack faster….. practice is key! Thus technique is particularly good on windier days…… hope this helps Tim Sailaboat

This boat is the RS Feva. It is a European youth boat used to train junior sailors as it is quite small.

Bearing away is just a change of course on any point of sailing. You can go from close hauled to a reach by bearing away. Also from a reach to a run is also bearing away . Gybing includes bearing away to and through the dead run so it’s all linked….. not sure that answers the question? Glad you like the videos

Indeed. A great training boat

Good question. Most if not all sailing dinghies have a low boom. The Laser (ILC class) which is used in the films is probably the most popular boat in the world and does have a low boom which is aluminium and quite light. Other boats with higher booms are not as fast. Some folk wear helmets like canoes any cycling but this is a personal choice. When teaching small children, helmets are preferred. In all the years I have sailed I have only made one trip to hospital with a student head bang but this was purely a precaution and seen very few injuries. The boom is a hazard but then again so is crossing the road, so learning in light winds is important and the importance of ducking is quickly learned! Don’t let this out you off if you want to learn but attend a sailing school who will walk you through the steps

Centreboards should be strong enough for anyone to pull on. Having said that I have seen them break on old boats. Newer boats tend to use very strong composites so I haven’t seen these break ever. It is all about technique. As I explain in the video it is a gentle and sustained pressure that should pull the boat up. If inverted use two people to get the boat in the flat capsize then the lighter person generally then swims around to be scooped aboard. Best thing is to practice in controlled and light winds and never sail alone so another boat could come and rescue you. (Leaving the boat until a powerboat can help) joining and sailing in a club environment is our overwhelming advice. As they should provide safety cover at the busy times Hope this helps! Everyone capsizes, it’s just part of sailing and the more you do it the better you get!

If the boat is positioned so the final pull has the sail in the water downwind the boat just comes up. If the sail is the other way round with the mast pointing towards the wind there is a chance the boat flips right over pushing the sailor underneath and then pop up on the other side. When in that situation I try to lift the tip of the mast clear of the water by just a few inches. This seems to then help the boat to rotate slightly and prevent the over flip. As mentioned in my previous reply sail at a club, practice the drill and resist strong wind sailing until your experience increases Happy sailing! Tim Sailaboat

Thanks for the message but no it is not a gybe. The boat is tacking here. If you look the tell tale sign is the sail flaps during the turn. If it was a gybe then the sail would remain under power all the time
